The Foundation of Diabetes Research Shutdown on April 30th 2024

The Foundation for Diabetes Research Board has recently met, to review 7 grant applications, and unanimously agreed to award $ 250,000 in grants to the following researchers:

  • $ 50,000 to Nikki Farnsworth, Ph.D. of Colorado School of Mines / JDRF for research on Engineered Nanocapsules for Targeted Drug Delivery to the β-Cell
  • $ 100,000 to Diana Velutto, Ph.D. of University of Miami / DRI for research on StemCell-Nano.  A revolutionary approach towards the cure of Type 1 Diabetes
  • $ 100,000 to Jeffrey Millman, Ph.D. of Washington University School of Medicine for research on Stem Cell-Derived Islets for Type 1 Diabetes Cell Replacement Therapy

We are very proud, in our 25th year to be able to help fund 3 worthwhile research endeavors at these prominent institutions directed towards a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

As some of you may know, due to various circumstances, including Covid and a dwindling membership, we regret to inform you that after careful review and consideration, a decision has been made to close the Foundation. We also decided, that given our legacy of 25 years, we wanted to also support a local organization and will be donating an award of $ 5,000 to Camp NEJEDA. The balance of our funds, after paying all of our expenses, will be donated to Diabetes Research Institute of Miami, with which we have had a longstanding relationship. We are beginning the legal and financial process and expect to close our doors sometime in the spring.

In particular, we would like to thank the founders of the organization, as well as all the past Officers, Board Members, Committee members, volunteers, and membership for their dedication and commitment to FDR.

It is our hope that through our contributions over the past 25 years, and our awarding almost $ 4.5 million in grants (See below for our previously funded grants), that we have made significant progress towards our quest for a cure and a world without Type 1 Diabetes.

It has been our honor to serve as Co-Presidents during this critical and important 25-year milestone.

Foundation for Diabetes Research

About

The Foundation for Diabetes Research (FDR) was founded in July 1999 by families in Morris, Sussex, Essex, and Union counties. The mission of the organization is to support research aimed at a cure for Type I diabetes and prevention of its severe complications. A committee comprised of members of our medical and scientific community and lay members review grants and give their opinions to fund certain grants to the Board of Directors.

Our goal is to be “Angel Funders” that have the ability to fund smaller projects with merit so that these grants may have a chance of attracting recognition from organizations such as the National Institute of Health (NIH).

With the help of the extraordinary people who raise funds on our behalf, we have been able to raise enough donations to provide over $4 million in grants for diabetes research.
